When Angels Call — Cindy Sproles

He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” Genesis 28:12

I lay, eyes wide, staring into the darkness of the room. Pulling the blanket tight around my arms I replayed the day’s events and wondered. Had I missed something? Where was the trumpet call, the jingling bell and the brilliance radiating from its halo? All day I’d sat by the bedside of my mother-in-law and not one angel.

Why, just a few weeks ago, I could walk through any major department store and they’d be all over the place. They appear as main characters in best selling novels, have starred in television shows and have almost won Oscars for block buster movies. Must be an issue with the actor’s guild, I thought. If ever someone deserved an angel escort it was Mrs. Kitty.

Then I pondered and thought on it some. Maybe I’d misunderstood their job description. I scanned my Bible. Deliver God’s word? Check. Offer comfort? Check. Protect from advancing armies? Check. Escort stupid men and stubborn women from carnal cities that are about to be obliterated by God? Check.

So how come Mrs. Kitty couldn’t get a little assistance, I wondered. Then I remembered all she’d done and I understood. She didn’t need an escort home. She knew the way.

She had served the need of every individual who had crossed her path. She’d fixed and repaired brokenness, given without expecting anything in return and quietly prayed for the hearts of thousands. She’d walked in the Rabbi’s footsteps for so long and with such dedication she knew the way to His home.

No, when Mrs. Kitty left I didn’t see the flowing train of her heavenly ushers. If the angels came they arrived without the paparazzi. Or it may be that when she left Mrs. Kitty leaned onto the shoulder of her angel and whispered, “Take care of him, the young man I love. You know who he is. The one I’ve been praying for all these years. Would you just stay a bit and watch over him? I think I can find my way home from here but he can’t.”

Goodbye, Mrs. Kitty. And thanks for bringing a bit of heaven to earth.
