The Sweet Word – Heather Spiva

Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste. Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Proverbs 24 13:14

Bees never “want.” Have you ever thought about honeybees and their comb – how this comb never allows them to want? Their comb is not just a secure and comfortable home, but it’s a place for them to eat, thrive, and to help their family by keeping the baby bees safe. The comb is the bees’ wellspring and they need it for survival. In the same way, the Bible, and all of the lessons within it, is our honeycomb.

Just as honey is good and sweet to the taste, the living word of God is our sustenance and wonderful for our bodies too. The Word is wisdom and truth; it is a guide that we can use as food for our daily lives. And like the bees, this comb gives us encouragement, nourishment, and help. And it is good for our soul.

By reading the scriptures, the lessons in the Bible calm our daily turmoil and increase our knowledge. The Word is our hope; a home within which to hide ourselves and grow in strength, allowing us to eat deep of God’s revelations that He wants to impart to us.

Are you in need of encouragement? Do you need biblical “honey” to make it through to tomorrow? Then dig into God’s honeycomb. The Bible is our source of fulfillment and food, one that harbors us when we are vulnerable to attack. Just as the bees fully rely on their comb for life, so should the word of God be our place of refuge, rest, and refueling.

God, sometimes life is so hard! I need your word; I need your substance every day to keep going. Help me to remember this, and to rely solely on you. You are the sweet honey that my soul desires. Amen.

A Heartfelt Lesson – Darlene Lund

…men’s hearts failing them for fear … Luke 21:26

I lost my father and youngest brother from heart attacks and watched my other brother go through a triple bypass. I knew I needed to see a cardiologist. After running the gamut of cardiac tests including an MRI of the heart, wearing a heart holter for thirty days, electrocardiogram, and a heart catheterization, they all showed that my plumbing looked good, but the electrical side of the heart wasn’t beating in sync.

I didn’t have peace with my doctor’s two recommendations. I needed time to get my life in balance and intentionally invite more peace. Fear had been knocking me down and was showing its effect all over my heart chambers. It had robbed me of joy, peace, purpose, focus, and forward living — as well as spraying stress all over me.

When I came upon this verse in Luke it caused me to pause. Especially since learning about studies that specifically show that fear can lead to heart attacks. …men’s hearts failing them for fear …

After losing my loved ones, I determined to lessen the grip of fear. I purposely chose verses to beat down the fear that desired to attach itself to me. Fear is not of God. I said that over and over slowly when fear wanted to march in, sit down, have a conversation with me, and then be my tag-a-long day and night. It was a purposeful choice to walk away from its grip.

Three years later I revisited my cardiologist for another round of tests. I am pleased to say that the cardiologist told me my heart beats were much more regular than before. The doctor gave me the thumbs up for improvement yet I knew who had healed my heart. It was God through His power, love, and helping me choose to keep a sound mind.

Only God knows the inner heart workings of my father and brother, but I know for me, fear had been a tag-a-long way too long.

How about you? Are you ready to purposefully walk away from the grip of fear to a life of freedom?

Secret Word

Secret Word

In the beginning was the Word…John 1:1a  NIV

Listen to Word for Word – She Said

Bird, bird, bird, bird is the word. Bird, bird, bird, bird is the word…

I never figured this one out but it sure made my kids dance around the room and laugh. The boys always thought Pee Wee Herman singing Bird is the Word, was such a hoot (no pun intended). Me, I never figured it out. For that fact, I never really figured out Pee Wee Herman but in the beginning, his show was filled with fun, silliness and well…words.

There was the secret word, the word of the day, and the infamous Bird is the Word song. Pee Wee even had a robot whose primary job was to spit out the word of the day. From Pee Wee, to Sesame Street, to Mr. Rogers (and for us baby boomers – Captain Kangaroo) words were always a vital part of their shows.

Elmo has taught children how words can hurt or make you happy, Mr. Rogers taught the importance of choosing wise words. Politicians sway public opinion, writers string them together in a melodic phrase, and parents use them to make or break their children.

I’ve been by the bedside of a sick friend and waited for “word.” Held out for the word to begin and wondered who gave the word. Words are important. But no words have ever meant more than the words of John. In the beginning was the Word.

That kinda says it all.

God put enough value in His son to tell us Jesus was the beginning. Within Christ were the Words God wanted us to hear and they…He, was with God. He was the word. The whole thing is almost too much to take in.

Every question, every need, every situation in life is found in the Word either by the stories Jesus told or in Christ himself and we have direct access to Him at our fingertips. We could say, He’s a page turner. Daily I praise Him for who He is—the beginning, the end. All that was and all that is. I am in Him and He is in me.

I’ll probably never figure out the meaning of that silly song Pee Wee Herman used to sing and I’m sure I’ll never understand what is fully encompassed in the Word. But what I do understand is the Word is all I need.

What words make a difference in your life? Let Christ be the only Word that counts.
