He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. Daniel 2:21 HCSB
“Right this way. Your vote counts.” The volunteer at the polls pointed me toward a nifty little voting machine. “Thank you for exercising your right as an American to vote for the candidate of your choice.”
His canned response made me grin. Still, the man’s heart was right. He offered to hold my jacket, gave me instructions on how the new voting machines worked, then reminded me, “Your vote counts.”
These days you show your driver’s license, sign your name, and you’re assigned a number printed on a nice warm sheet of thermal paper that, once entered in the poll, allows your vote to COUNT.
I spun the knob watching candidates’ names swoosh past. That was fun. So I spun it several more times. “Round and round she goes. Where she stops…nobody knows.” The knob highlighted the names over and over and I began to wonder why my candidate wasn’t listed.
Down to business. I highlighted my choice then un-highlighted it and then, yep…I highlighted it again. I was participating in the country’s choice for leadership. Every four years, I head to the polls, stand, stare at the ballots, and punch a button. And every election my choice for president is never listed.
For the life of me, I can’t figure out why God isn’t listed on the ballot. When I go to my knees, He’s Johnny-On-The-Spot. My candidate immediately goes to work to guide, help, provide, and love me. He’s personal. He listens, and when my candidate makes a campaign promise…He keeps it.
Even when God knew the end result of Israel having a king, He allowed them the opportunity to see just what kind of leaders men were. He worked wonders through those who turned to Him for wisdom and guidance and for those who didn’t well…He ousted them. Israel demanded an earthly king but they already had the mightiest King of all.
I spun the wheel again just to make sure GOD, ALMIGHTY was not listed then I highlighted the write-in vote — tried to add His name but it must have been too many letters because the machine wouldn’t take it. So I chose a “man” to lead. But before I punched the red CAST YOUR BALLOT button, I prayed out loud. “God, restore our nation.”
Exercise your right to vote. Go to your knees and ask God to establish the leadership necessary that will change a sinful nation. The right leader already reigns on high. Pray for His wisdom and leadership.
