Baptism

Baptism

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 (NKJV)

Listen to A Cool Drink – She Said

Her question took me back. Stunned me. “I want to be baptized. Will you baptize me?”

I couldn’t answer…couldn’t swallow…couldn’t breathe. I was registered for a ladies retreat this weekend. I’d committed to driving. Folks depended on me. Maybe we could push her baptism back a week.

“Me?” I said. “Me?”

“You are the one who brought me. Yes, you.”

What do you say? Sorry, I can’t baptize you. Absolutely not. What you say is an emphatic yes. So I did. I could have told her to” wait another week, now that you’ve made that confession in your heart, the act can wait a few days.” But she was thirsty now and now was when she needed living water. This young woman’s desire to be baptized was the priority.

I connect deeply to the Psalms. When I read David’s writings, it’s clear why he was the man after God’s own heart. David, in his lamenting, was so genuine…so vulnerable and transparent. He could pour himself into the hands of God in such a repentant and desiring way that anyone who reads his words connects with it..

David longed for God. Desired His presence to the point he could only describe himself as thirsty with nothing to quench.

I’m thirsty too, walking a dry, cracked land right now. My feet drag deep into the hot sand and the sun burns me. There’s no water to quench my parched throat. What I want… I want now. What I need is immediate. Yet I wonder where and when God will dampen my lips with a drink.

The wait is different for everyone but the thirst is the same. My friend asked me to baptize her on Sunday – she’s thirsty for Christ…seeking Him now, longing for the completion of her obedience. Nothing is more important than quenching her thirst for the Father.

My thirst is tough. I can hardly swallow for the dryness but I must continue through the desert…seeking clarity, definition, guidance for God’s plan for me. When I cried out, “Where Lord? When Lord,” He answered me with this: Take your sister into the living water. Drink with her and you will be refreshed.

Oh my God, my Father, what a provider, what an amazing Lord You are. For you filled my cup in the burning desert and quenched my thirst as well.

When you feel as though God has forsaken you. When you feel like you’ll die in the desert, a spring will well up beneath you. Touch your finger to it and take a cool drink.

Steadfast and Immovable – She Said

Steadfast and Immovable

Steadfast and Immovable

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.  I Corinthians 15:58

Listen to Steadfast and Immovable – She Said

“What’s the point?” Ian said. “We’re fooled into thinking all this work we do as preachers is useful.”

“You’re saying my work for Jesus is useless?” Dale pulled his Bible under his arm.  “It is not. The call we follow is not to please men, it’s to please God. It’s not useless.”

Dale was heartbroken. Hurt. Disappointed his trusted preacher friend had brushed off the conviction he’d made four years earlier.

Ian was a preacher’s kid and from the first time the Bible college choir came to present a program at their church, Ian decided that’s what he wanted to do – go to Bible college and become a worship leader. Now, four years after his graduation, he’d brushed off his position on the church staff and walked away.

Too many young men and women go to Bible college with good intentions and walk away a few years later disappointed and broken. Whether they face congregations who refuse to move the church ahead or an inner challenge to their own belief, more and more ministerial recipients change their profession. According to The Fuller Institute, George Barna, and Pastoral Care Inc., 1700 ministers left the ministry every month last year. 80% of pastors and 84% of their spouses felt unqualified and discouraged in the role of a minister. Discouraged . . . it makes one wonder if Ian had a point.

If anyone understood discouragement it was Paul. The guy found himself in the pit of a prison as much as he found himself in the sunshine. Still, never once did Paul feel his work was in vain. He knew what he did was not the work of man, but of God. Armed with that understanding, Paul was “immoveable and always abounding in the work of the Lord.” Over and over he reminded others to rejoice in the situation they were in. Be steadfast and courageous.

I’m sure he probably felt a little frustrated at times when folks refused to make changes (he was human), but Paul forged ahead knowing he was doing exactly what God wanted and expected of him . . . knowing his efforts would be used to further the kingdom.

Accepting the call to serve does not promise a pat on the back or an award for stick-to-it-tiveness but is never in vain. God uses every seed we plant on His behalf. This weekend we’re teaching writers to advance in the charge God has given them. Will their path be easy? Nope. But it is always well worth the effort.

When you feel your efforts in Christ are worthless think of Paul and his persistence to spread the word. Be steadfast and immoveable. God will nurture the seeds you plant.

Speak the Truth – She Said

Get Away With God – He Said

What is Truth?

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Joel 2:28 King James Version

Listen to Speak the Truth – She Said

The giant palm dangled from the post in the wind. I leaned my head to the side to read the blue hand-painted words inside the tattered sign. Palm Readings – Your future in the Palm of My Hand.

It was closed. Had been for years…or at least it looked like it. I pressed my hands against the clouded window and peered in. A woman sat, legs crossed, in a chair while an older woman traced the lines of her hand.

I wasn’t comfortable with this type of hand-to-hand combat. That’s what our missions professor called these field trips. He’d take us by groups of ten, pair us up, and send us into the back streets of Knoxville. Professor or not, my folks would have died if they’d known we were doing this type of evangelism.

“This is where you meet the real people. The ones who blatantly search for answers from anywhere or anyone they can find. This is where you learn to evangelize.”

I wondered, as Alex pecked on the rickety door, why anyone would come to such a trashy place in search of answers. Why would you bother? It was all just bunk. The watering hole for suckers.

Alex pushed me gently behind him as the door creaked open. “We’re from the Bible college across town.”

The woman blew smoke in his face. “So.”

“We wanted to share the word of God with you.”

She hissed and pulled open the door. “Don’t need no word. I give the word.” She slipped a card in his hand that read Madam Michelle, Speaker of the Spirits. “We both heal hearts,” she said.

“No, only God heals.” Alex gently placed a pocket-sized Bible in her hand. The woman stood speechless, then closed the door.

Our world is so deceived. Truth is a fleeting thing and becoming more skewed with each passing day. Find your own happiness in you. Sometimes my heart just aches when the truth is within reach but folks fan it away.

The day of the Lord is coming and the only way to Him is through Christ. Don’t let the world deceive you. Instead, let the words of Christ fill you. Let Him pour out His spirit on you. In Him there is truth.

The Wealth of Love – Cindy Sproles
avatar

Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; Genesis 24:67

I had nothing. Absolutely nothing but my two boys.

The man I’d loved, the father of my children, didn’t love me. I crumpled the glitter-coated valentine I’d found in a moving box and tossed it. This was not a road I’d travel again. Swiping tears, I dumped a box of cards and letters in the trash.

The boys were the only good that had come from that union and they were my life’s blood. I watched as the two toddlers played in the mound of packing paper . . . giggling . . . happy. They had no clue at three-years-old, our family had just crumbled.

I’d made up my mind in that moment my heart would never seek after love again. It just couldn’t take another hit. But God had other plans. He had Tim.

We met through a mutual friend. Both recently divorced, both with boys the same age, neither with any money…we found comfort in our friendship. As the year passed, the time we spent together skewed and our friendship turned to love. We had little, starting over and all.

But we had love.

Abraham laid a great burden on his servant to go to his homeland and find Isaac a wife. It wouldn’t be easy to find a woman willing to leave her family and travel the distance back to Abraham’s family, but he pleaded before God to lead him to the woman who would love Isaac. And God did just that.

Tim’s mom prayed for Tim to find happiness just as my mom prayed for me. They didn’t ask for us to have wealth…simply love. When we married, our parents were thrilled. They saw we had little but knew it didn’t matter. God had truly joined us.

I tried to get Tim to restate our vows on our 25th wedding anniversary. He laughed, kissed my forehead and said, “Twice was enough.” He was right. The broken vows of a first marriage, the cherished vows of a second—twice was enough. We’d taken each other, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. We’d taken each other.

God takes us into His arms and grants us wealth far beyond money. He grants us love and eternity. What a gift. Will you accept His wealth of love?

I Never Chose Arabia – She Said

I Never Chose

I Never Chose

I Never Chose Arabia – She Said

Listen to I Never Chose Arabia – She Said

I did not immediately consult with anyone; nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia. (the desert). Galatians 1:16a-17b

Surely God, I thought, you’re not asking me to leave my church family.

It was the hardest year of our lives…my life, when God nudged me away from the congregation where I was raised. Those people who’d taught me, inspired me, guided me in my knowledge of Christ, would soon be in my past.

For months people whispered. Rumors found their way to me and my heart was broken. “Think about this,” one said. “You realize what you’re doing? Right?” The decision ultimately lay in my hands — stay where life was comfortable or walk into the desert. Few believed me, fewer cared, but I knew God had called me into uncharted territory. There was no question about His intention, only my decision to follow.

It was the best decision God has ever made for me and God did make the decision to call me. It wasn’t my idea to walk away from those brothers and sisters in Christ I loved and toward a different congregation who took me under wing. There was no counseling with church leadership or family. There were no friends knocking my door down attempting to convince me otherwise. In fact, the fourteen weeks it took for me to decide was like standing ankle deep in the burning hot sands of Arabia. The only sound I heard was the hot desert wind in my ears.

Paul’s past was skewed in the eyes of Christians. After all, it was his mission to annihilate them. But when Christ called him to walk into the fire, he followed. He didn’t consult with his buddies or talk with officials to get their approval…he experienced Christ first hand, so when Paul felt the nudge, he answered. His blinded eyes were opened by a God who called him (and his past) to become one of the greatest witnesses of his time.

Following after Christ is not always the popular decision; even in the church. We sometimes find ourselves buried in the complacency of our relationship with God, refusing to step into the desert and see what God has waiting.

I’ve never wanted to visit Arabia but I’ve certainly walked in the desert waiting on God. My decision became my testimony and my blessing. When God nudges you, when He presses against your heart to follow Him on a different path…step out. Go. For a time you may walk in the desert but when you reach the oasis…what a refreshment.

Step to the Side – She Said

In Defense of Satan

Words

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Jude 1:9

Listen to Step to the Side – She Said

Joseph didn’t have a chance. There was no pleasing his associates in the firm. Their habit was to browbeat one another; throw insults and lies. What Joseph saw was a firm falling apart from partners who blamed everyone else for their mishaps.

“It’s all your fault. The company isn’t moving ahead because of you. You’re a detriment to the firm.”

Joseph felt sick. He knew he’d worked hard in the firm, studying, bringing cases before hard judges and winning them but when his associates accused him of being a detriment, he shook his head and walked away.

I’m a peacemaker (and not the one that wears black leather jackets). I’ve never handled conflict well and it’s me who falls in the rubble of those whose opinion weighs heavier. Oh, I state my opinion, make suggestions, but if I’m attacked from the opposition, I tend to walk away. There have been times I’ve felt anger boil beneath the surface as others have hurled insults and hurtful insinuations. My thoughts are, this isn’t my battle, it’s God’s. He knows if I’m right or wrong and in Him I find the protection I need to withstand the attacks.

Even Michael the archangel understood the battle was God’s. He could have let loose with lightening fast accusations against Satan and probably have been in the right, but he didn’t. He stepped to the side and said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

It’s hard for us to walk away from a fight. Our nature leads us to defend our honor regardless of whether we’re right or wrong. I walked away from the hardest battle in my life and chose to say nothing while others made their own decisions about the situation. Folks waited for me to retaliate, but I didn’t. It wasn’t my battle.

There’s something to be said about the archangel’s example in his war of words with Satan. He showed us that even though he may have had just cause, it was God’s place to rebuke.

Walking away from the battle I faced was the best decision I’ve ever made. Think about your battles and your words then step to the side and let God take control.

Prodigal? Me? – She Said

Teach Your Children

Prodigal? ME? – She Said

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Listen to Prodigal? Me – She Said

“We’re all prodigals, aren’t we?”

The Sunday morning message blared from the television. I dropped a tissue into the trash. My head throbbed and my body ached from the flu and I wasn’t sure I could listen to this hell-fire and damnation preacher scream at me. Chills crawled up my arms as the country pastor slammed his hand on the pulpit. “It’s true. We are all prodigals.”

I covered my head with the pillow, wishing I could will the remote into my hand. I’m not a prodigal. Not by any means. I pray every day and try to be the person God wants me to be; honest, truthful, loving. No. I’m not a prodigal.

There might have been a time I wandered but never very far. Maybe I questioned, but not very hard. Things were…well…status quo. My love for Christ never faltered…it just wasn’t pressing.

I sat straight up in the bed.

“Oh my gosh. I was a prodigal.”

Sometimes our view of God becomes so skewed by the world we wander away, searching for anything that might fill the void in our lives; never seeing the loving God who waits.

I was raised in the church and though my love for Christ never died, I succumbed to the world for a time…searching. At thirty-six I sat teaching a young adult Sunday school class. “How active are you in Christ’s life?” I asked. Then it hit me. Not very, but He was certainly active in mine. I was a prodigal. That was the turning point in my Christian life. I grasped hold of what I’d been taught and crawled home.

Solomon understood we eventually return to what we are taught. It never really leaves us, we just shove it away for a time. His words were not only a warning but an encouragement to parents. Teach them and they will not turn from it. We have sons who, like me for a time, search to fill the void. They’ve been raised beneath the wing of Christ. They’re fine young men and though their love for Christ has not died…they wander. We pray daily they will remember and not turn from the love of Christ but become active in Him again.

Raise them up in the ways of Christ. A time will come when they wander and seek. Eventually what they’ve been taught will resurface. God will work in their prodigal hearts and they will become active in Him. My job? To pray without ceasing.

100 Reasons for Integrity – She Said

One Hundred Reasons for Integrity – She Said

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out. Proverbs 10:9 NIV

Listen to 100 Reasons for Integrity- She Said

It looked like a $1 bill under the seat in front of me. I slid my foot forward and snagged the bill pulling it toward my fingers. “Well, look at that. A $1.00…woah…$100 dollar bill.” Wow, I thought, this could reimburse part of my airfare.

It would have been nice but it wasn’t my money. I guessed man in front of me dropped it so Imotioned to flight attendant. “Is the man in the seat in front of me coming back?”

She glanced to the rear of the plane. “I think that’s him back there.”

I opened my fist and exposed the money. “I think he lost this.”

The flight attendant’s eyes widened. “I’ll ask.” She to walked to the man and immediately he began to pat his trousers and poke in his jacket pocket. Within minutes he stood next to me in the plane.

“The flight attendant said you found something that belonged to me.”

I grinned. “Can you identify the object?”

“I believe his name is Benjamin Franklin.” I slipped the $100 bill into his hand.

“Thank you so much. You could have kept that you know.”

“It wasn’t mine to keep.” He sat in the seat across the aisle and we chatted for most of the flight. Just before we deplaned, I gave him a business card. “Join the devotions. You’ll enjoy them.”

The writer of Proverbs penned a wealth of wisdom for us to glean. Some, simple common sense and others solid life standards. He reminded us integrity walks securely and dishonestly catches up. But the walk of integrity is not a hop, skip and a jump. It’s wrought with temptations that are sometimes much easier to grasp than not. I could have kept the money and never uttered a word but it was a matter of integrity. I had an idea who the money belonged to and keeping it was as good as stealing.

The man walked away and I sang Que sera sera then waved goodbye to an easy $100. I could have kept it and no one would have been the wiser. Months later a letter came to our ministry mail box. Inside, a business card and a check for $100 along with a sticky note . “100 reasons for integrity. Use as you see fit.”

It wasn’t hard to see the joy of walking in integrity. The reward far exceeded the $100 check. It carried with it the thrill of knowing God was pleased.

When you’re tempted to walk the crooked path, choose integrity. Your reward may not be 100 reasons for integrity but the joy and pleasure you bring to the Father is well worth the choice.

On My Honor – She Said
avatar

On My Honor

Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise. Ephesians 6:2 NIV

Listen to On My Honor- She Said

She slipped a paper under my arm and grinned. “Wanna buy some cookies?”

I lifted my hand and extended three fingers. “On my honor, I will try: to serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law.”

The little girl’s mouth flew open.

“What?” I said. “I graduated from the Girl Scouts. Of course I’ll buy cookies.” I wasn’t sure if she was more impressed I knew the Girl Scout Promise or that I’d bought cookies…either way I had her attention.

My mom was, bar none, the best Girl Scout leader ever. She taught us more than I could have ever imagined—from cooking, to emergency skills, to survival hiking. She was the ultimate in leadership.

The first thing Mom taught us as Brownie Scouts was the Girl Scout Promise. She didn’t just teach us the words or the habit of reciting it each week; Mom taught us what “On my honor” really means.

As a Girl Scout leader, Mom made sure every girl who wanted to go to church got to go. It was a common thing for her to pick up girls weekly and take them to our church. Mom taught us to honor our parents with our words and our actions. Kids respected her, admired her, and always found a place under her wing.

My mother is a master quilter and recently she completed a quilt she’d started over forty years ago—a troop quilt with the silhouettes of each girl she’d mentored through the years. As I stood admiring it, I realized what an honor it was to call her my mother, my friend, and my Girl Scout leader, and I wondered if I had honored her appropriately in my life.

Through her guidance, over seventy-five girls were impacted and to this day, many of them still ask about her, love her, and honor her with the example of values she taught them as children.

Paul instructed the Ephesians in the ways of a Christian home. He preached to everyone, “Honor your father and mother…it comes with a promise that your earthly life will be good.” How right he still is today.

I’m proud of my mother and even when I don’t agree with her, I honor her above all else because she is my mother and her love for me is immense, her guidance direct, and her ways godly. Because of her, I am who I am.

I smiled as the little Brownie Scout be-bopped away with the success of a cookie sale. My prayer for her is that her Girl Scout leader is the ultimate godly leader my mom is.

When I honor my mother, I honor Christ. So I offer you this challenge…On my honor, I will try…won’t you?

Life isn’t Fair – She Said

Life isn't Fair

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Matthew 2:16 NIV

Listen to He Will See You Through – She Said

“What a rip!” My son wasted no time in forming judgment. “That’s not fair. Not fair at all.” And he was right.

We sat stunned as a national news story hit our local television newscast. Sixteen-year-old, Wes Leonard, of Fennville, Michigan died on the court after shooting the winning lay-up for his high school basketball team and sending them to the play-offs.

One moment there were cheers of joy and in an instant, silence…dead silence. The teen who’d rushed down the court, giving his all, now lay dead from an enlarged heart.

“How sad.” I said. “The kid was a hero and he never got the opportunity to bask in the moment. Why does life seem so unfair?”

After the Magi heeded their warning not to revisit Herod so they made the trek home via a different route. They had no idea the repercussion their decision would make. Their obedience led Herod into a rage that ultimately resulted in the death of hundreds of baby boys. Unsure which baby was the Christ, Herod condemned them all to death.

I’ve yet to fully understand why life is so unfair. It’s easy to blame God for the bad things that happen but is He really to blame? Dale Tackett, teacher and author of The Truth Project, says it best. “It’s a cosmic battle being fought on a daily basis.”

For every spiritual win scored, Satan strikes back and those who strive to do what is right and good, become collateral damage in the war. Perhaps this is why God never promised walking in the light would be easy. It’s not that the God of the Universe expects our obedience then punishes us for doing it…it’s that Lucifer lies in wait.

We may not understand the collateral damage of a spiritual or cosmic war, nor do we grasp the greater good of the will of God. Often all we see is the sadness left in the wake of obedience, success and honesty.

We each have numbered days. Do not waste them. Be a hero like Wes Leonard by doing your best in everything you do. Earthly rewards are awesome but eternal rewards by far outweigh the temporal. Life isn’t fair, but heaven is.
