He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Proverbs 19:17 – KJV
My living arrangements were unstable. Progressive events placed me in a position where I became jobless after more than five years as a government employee. I was single, childless, and my parents were deceased. My family, for the most part, is not close.
While away on a weekend Christian retreat, I shared with a fellow Christian that I was homeless. “You’re not homeless,” she said. “Tell folks you’re in transition.”
I liked that and began to express it.
God allowed circumstances that led me to live in a homeless shelter. The experience proved to be rich with beneficial lessons. Residents were there for various reasons but the common denominator was we were all, financially, at poverty level. It was surprising to meet the number of Christians who lived there. I connected with several of them and it was a great help to share with one another about Jesus. We prayed, laughed, and encouraged each other in our transitional journeys.
I sought work, and received unemployment compensation while I lived in the homeless shelter. One day as I walked with one of my fellow Christian shelter residents, Ruth, she mentioned she was in route to get some used clothing from a charity. Our Lord told me to offer Ruth the purchase of some new clothes. My spirit heard God was tired of people who could afford otherwise, giving used items to His precious children.
Ruth gladly accepted my offer. As an act of love and fellowship, I sensed it was important I go shopping with Ruth. When Jesus fed the people the fish and bread, He ate with the people.
“Everything in the store is discounted,” a store patron remarked. We didn’t see any such visible indications but we consulted store personnel and found everything in the store at lowered prices for the entire month. God knew the blessing in store for us there. That shopping experience with Ruth was one of my most rewarding and memorable.
Sharing what you have even when it hurts will be the best experience of your life. Won’t you give until it hurts?
