The Day the Brick Wall Fell – Joy Miller

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Psalm 139:2-3

The day my world crashed I found relief.

It began as any other ordinary day. I drove to my job where I worked as an assistant in a corporate office. Turning into the parking lot, I felt grateful to get a spot close to the street. I pulled in, parking in front of an abandoned downtown brick building. A few minutes later, coffee in hand I settled into my chair in my windowless office. As usual, I had brought my lunch, but at the last minute I decided I needed some sunshine so I went out for my meal. When I returned, my prime space was gone and I had to park on the opposite side of the lot.

After work I hurried to my car, passing my prime spot. I got in, put the car in reverse, and backed out. Suddenly I heard a horrible crash. In disbelief I watched in my rear-view mirror as the façade of the ancient brick building tumbled down. Bricks pelted the row of cars parked beneath…including the car that had taken my space. “Jesus,” I said. “Thank you, Jesus.” If I had left one minute later I could have been seriously injured or killed.

The Psalmist says God is familiar with all our ways. He knows us by name. We may feel lost in the crowd at times but He knows our thoughts, our concerns, and our struggles. Scripture shows us time and again how God worked in individuals’ lives in an intimate way.

As I drove away, amazement and joy filled me. You see, I had been wondering if God really knew where I was. I feared He’d forgotten me. But His dramatic protection that day reminded me He truly is involved in my daily life.

How has God fashioned your story? When you are disheartened, journal. Take time to note the smallest blessings. When we become discouraged we can find comfort by reading the Psalms – David’s journal – and by reviewing our own “passage markers” to recall how God has been faithful to us in the most painful of times.

When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who knows my way. Psalm 142:3

Part of me wanted desperately to be at the writers conference, but another part of me wanted to flee. Adrenaline set every nerve ending on fire. Fear of getting lost on campus or literally trembling in front of someone plagued me. How could I manage a week of meeting with editors and a full schedule of classes while struggling with panic attacks? I felt exhausted before the conference began. I begged God to equip me for the task ahead and I stepped forward in faith that He would help me.

God knows when our spirit grows faint. He sees where we are and is always faithful to minister to our need. He may do it through scriptures, a story of victory, or someone’s prayer of encouragement for us. At the times when God seems absent, things can look very dark and frightening. That’s when the truth of His Word saves us from despair. He is the lifter of our heads. He is our constant companion and comforter.

All of us battle something. It could be illness, job loss, or strife in our family. Whatever it may be, realize you don’t have to remain faint and discouraged. Cry out to God; tell Him about your heartaches and questions. Read the Word and plug into its power. Ask others to pray for you.

God provided for me at the conference. Each day I was given the strength and grace necessary to do what lay before me. Over and over through keynote speeches or personal conversations, I would discover others were dealing with hard, often similar problems. They understood my struggle and could empathize with my pain. They shared with me how God was helping them overcome their trials day by day.

Are you weary today? Will you reach out to God and let Him renew you? If so, you may discover the Lord is already at work using His power and the comfort of others to strengthen you. Please don’t give up. Give thanks, instead.

Never Alone – Joy E. Miller

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. John 14:16

My parents were going away on a trip, but I didn’t want them to leave. At five years of age I was sick with croup and I craved the comfort of their presence. Our pastor and his wife stayed with my sister and me for the weekend. Mom placed a vaporizer/humidifier in my room. The cool mist enabled me to breathe more easily. Mom also wrote a message of love for me on a blackboard and put it by my bed so I could see it when I awakened. But one morning I saw that the vaporizer’s mist had erased Mom’s message. I was inconsolable. To my child’s mind the connection to my mom was gone. I wept as someone tried to comfort me. I wished with all my heart I could get that love note back.

When the time came for Jesus to leave earth, his disciples were grief stricken and afraid because the visible connection to their Savior would soon be gone. They couldn’t imagine a life where they could no longer hear His voice or walk beside Him. But before He left, He promised them He would send His Holy Spirit to dwell in them and be their constant comfort and guide.

Today we have that promise too. We also have His written Word. It’s His personal message of love to us and nothing can erase it…not heartache or fears or loss of loved ones…not even the fog and confusion when He seems absent. His words are forever. They are our comfort and strength until we see Jesus face to face and the time of separation is finally over.

As a little five-year-old, I learned that just because the message disappeared, it didn’t mean my mom’s love had been lost. I had to trust that she would return and that I would be taken care of in the meantime.

What do you do when you don’t feel God’s presence? He hasn’t left you. Challenge your feelings with the truth of God’s Word. He has promised to never leave nor forsake us. His Holy Spirit is within us. We are never alone.
