The Resurrected Bird – Pat Moyer

What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. Matthew 10:29

“Help me! Quick!” said the voice on the other end of the line. “I’ve come across a bird in the road that has been badly hurt. I think it might be dead and I don’t know what to do!”

My friend, Suresh, jumped in his car and drove to meet the caller. He had been praying for this student and God had given him the opportunity to meet with her again. She had come to a few luncheons given for the college students by Suresh and his wife, Ramani, and she knew of their love for all people, so she figured they must surely love animals too.

Suresh didn’t waver in his quest to touch her soul with God’s grace and mercy. In spite of his busy schedule, he drove this young woman 20 miles away to take the fallen starling to a bird sanctuary for treatment, in spite of the fact that it looked as though this bird had already died. As they drove, he spoke with the girl about God’s love.

When they arrived at the sanctuary, the bird was already standing. In Suresh’s words, “He had been miraculously resurrected!” They left it in good hands and drove home.

The “chance” incident with the bird had been a marvelous bridge to a deeper friendship. On the way home, Suresh shared his own testimony with the young woman from the Middle East and he invited her to come hear his message in church that week.

Just as God watches the birds of the sky, He is watching over us. He used this little bird to reach the heart of a student with His love. And He used the story Suresh told to encourage the hearts of believers as well.

When I heard Suresh relate this story, I thought about his unselfishness as he helped this student and the fallen bird. Through his willingness to be available to the needs of others, the Lord touched this girl’s life as well as mine.

I felt God ask me, “How far will you go for me? ”

How far will you go?

A Treasure for My Heart – Pat Moyer
avatar

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also . Luke 12:34 NIV

Twelve months old and cute as a button; that is my little grandson, Austin. His first birthday was in December and, of course, there was a big family party. Austin received so many nice gifts: clothes, toys, books, and money. Then came Christmas…more clothes, toys, and books. He was showered with treasures by all his family members. What a lucky little boy.

Being a normal one year old, Austin doesn’t see the value of all he has been given. Recently, he came to my house with his best treasure. As his Mommy carried him in, he held up a lint roller and said “Roll! Roll!”

“He wants to take this everywhere, Mom,” said my daughter. “If we try to take it from him, he cries and sobs something awful.”

Little Austin has received all these wonderful gifts and, yet, he hangs on to a lint roller with deep admiration and fascination. He’d rather have the lint roller than the brand new toys. He wants a different treasure than what his parents have for him.

I couldn’t help but think that is just how we are with God. We are grasping the treasures of this life with both hands, crying and screaming if we don’t get what we want. Yet, Jesus told his disciples they should place their hearts on things above, not on things below. We, as his followers, have better treasure than what our hands want to hold on to. We have a treasure for our hearts.

It is time for us to let go of the tight grasp we have on the things of this earth– open our hearts to all that God has in store for us through Jesus Christ…a new heart, a new spirit, a home in heaven, His love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. Look at your gifts and possessions. Do you value what God has given you?

Dear Lord, you are the treasure of my heart. Help me to follow your example more and more each day. Help me to focus on things above and not on things below. Help me to give up those things you don’t want me to have and to follow only you.

Blurred Vision – Pat Moyer
avatar

“Now we see things imperfectly as in a poor mirror, but then we will see
everything with perfect clarity…”
I Corinthians 13:12a NLT

Yesterday I went to the salon to get my hair done. My daughter did such a nice job and my hair looked great. As I stood up and reached for my glasses, I knocked them to the floor. Luckily, they seemed to have survived. One side looked like it had a little smudge on the lens, but the other side looked very clear and neither lens looked like it had been damaged or broken.

So, I put them on and looked in the mirror. Oh my, I thought to myself. I can’t see right! Everything looks blurry! What is the matter with me? I wondered. I didn’t tell anyone in the salon. Instead, I walked around the rooms talking with people, taking my time, trying to determine if I was getting sick, having serious vision problems, or just what might be happening. I’ll have to call the eye doctor and see if I am having some kind of serious problem, I thought.

I stood in the back room, looking around, deciding if I could see to drive home. My daughter walked up to me and said, “Are you missing something, Mom?” I looked at her smiling face and there in her hand, she held one of the lenses to my eyeglasses! I told the receptionist, Kathy, what had happened and she laughed hysterically as I told her I thought something was wrong with me.

My vision had been clouded and blurred. One eye had the correct lens and one eye had no lens. It made me think of the verse in the song Amazing Grace; I once was blind but now I see. What a difference one lens made. Everything was clear and came into focus.

Walking through our daily tasks and trials, we sometimes do not see why things happen as they do. We can’t seem to put into focus the overall plan God has in mind. That is because we don’t have perfect sight in this life. But someday….we will see and understand all the things that happen in this life, and we will see Jesus face to face. What a day that will be!

Living Water – Pat Moyer
avatar

“On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’’ John 7:37-39 NLT

Driving to work one day, I noticed that huge rocks had been placed in the yard of a new home under construction. I wondered what they were planning and what kind of equipment had been used to put such massive stones into place.

A few days later I drove past again. The formation was more predictable. I could see what they were making. In fact, it was partly finished. A large waterfall stood like a beacon sending a message from the yard—water tumbled freely and powerfully down the stairway of rocks.

As my eyes followed the path of the water, I thought of the words of Jesus: “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.” This water sure was living, it was downright lively. It ran like a NASCAR twisting and turning, spraying and foaming.

Jesus wants to do that in us. He wants to so fill us with the Holy Spirit that we overflow with abundant joy. His Spirit in us will come spilling out, quenching the thirst of those we come in contact with. He will send those who are thirsty to cross our path so we can share the refreshment and strength that He’s given us.

Does your life seem dry and parched? Come to the fountain and drink the living water. Be revived.

Prayer: Thank you for quenching my thirst, Lord. Help me to be the kind of person who will share with others how they can have the same thing you have given to me.

Deception – Pat Moyer
avatar

“The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.” Gensis 3:13 NLT

A snake lay coiled in my garden, hidden by the color of the wood mulch. I would have missed him had my husband not pointed him out. I shivered. Just the thought of this hideous creature gave me the creeps. Snakes have an uncanny ability to deceptively blend in with their surroundings.

It was like that from the very beginning—in the Garden of Eden. In a place of perfection, deception found its way inside.

A voice hissed in Eve’s ear, “You can eat that forbidden fruit. You won’t really die if you disobey God’s command.”

Unfortunately for Eve, her husband didn’t point out the deception in those words. He allowed himself to be swayed as well and perfection was lost to all mankind.

Mankind has always struggled to control his destiny. We have been deceived into thinking we can be like God—build our own paradise. We don’t need to do things God’s way. We can gain communion with God our way. Satan has never stopped his attempts to keep us deceived.

Satan’s lies mislead and deceive us but, by the grace of a Holy God, a way was made to get back into the garden. God promised Eve her seed would crush the head of Satan and by His death and resurrection Jesus did just that.

Consider Eve’s words The serpent deceived me. Ask Jesus to show you what you might be trying to control in your own life. Have you been trying to eat forbidden fruit—do things your own way? Go to Jesus and ask for His forgiveness. He will lead you out of deception and into His perfection.

Wicked – Pat Moyer
avatar

“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:12-14 KJV

On a recent day trip I happened upon a quaint little craft sale. Beautiful fall arrangements, signs, and harvest decorations were displayed with a line of people anxious to purchase their favorite item. As I perused the menagerie a few things caught my eye and set me to thinking.

A cute little pig hugged his blankey and a sign which said, “Give Thanks.” I don’t know if he was thankful that Turkeys are a favorite food for Thanksgiving. Or maybe he was just telling me to be thankful for all my blessings.

Another decoration with pumpkins, squash, and hay had a sign that said “Wicked Welcome”. I couldn’t help but think how mixed up the world is today. In current slang I guess “wicked” means something good, something kids want to be; whereas in my years as a teenager, “wicked” meant you might be thrown into a juvenile detention center.

My mind wandered back to the “wicked” sign. As distasteful as being “wicked” is to me, that is what we all are before Jesus rescues us. The Bible tells us “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” That means me…my heart is wicked. Or, my heart was wicked. But something changed me—Jesus.

He welcomed me into his arms even when I was “wicked” and he died to save me from my sins. We don’t have the power to change ourselves. But when we listen to God’s call and accept Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection as payment for our sins, he removes the power of Satan that binds us in the kingdom of darkness.

Has God been calling to you today? You, too, can be transformed from “wicked” into a “welcomed” child of God. Answer the call, thank Jesus for what he has done and receive the blessing of eternal life today.
