Jesus Things – Tim Wade

In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:4

I think I was the youngest person to ever work as a mall Santa. Seventy-two-year-old Evelyn thought so as she pulled down my itchy fake beard and inspected my youthful twenty-three-year-old face. Evelyn had her picture taken with Santa every year of her life, and now it was my turn. “You sure are a young one,” she observed, as I did my best to re-attach my beard.

But not every experience was as traumatic as the one with Evelyn. My most memorable experience was of a little girl with long curly brown hair, soft brown dancing eyes, and a bright warm smile.

“What is your name?” I asked as she hopped up on my lap.

“My name is Amy,” she said ducking her head.

“How old are you, Amy?”

Amy held up five fingers.

“And what do you want for Christmas?”

“I want a Cabbage Patch Doll, My Little Pony, a necklace, and Jesus things,” replied Amy.

“Jesus things?” I asked. “What are Jesus things?”

Amy shrugged her shoulders and smiled. “I don’t know. Just Jesus things.”

I wished Amy a Merry Christmas and told her I would do my best to get her everything on her list.

A week later the job was over.

As I walked past Santa’s throne one last time, someone asked what we were going to do with all the children’s letters to Santa that had been stuffed in his mailbox. I volunteered to take them and once back home began to look through them. Among them was one written in crayon from a little girl named Amy.

Dear Santa,
I want a Cabbage Patch Doll, My Little Pony, a necklace, and Jesus things.”
Love Amy

At the bottom of the page was a picture of each gift, a manger scene, and a cross…and then I got it.

In a way that few adults rarely understand, Amy had grasped the true meaning of Christmas; that Jesus had been born in a manger so that he could die on a cross. But Amy not only understood that Jesus had been sent to earth to die for the sins of the world, she also understood that he had come to give us all a present – eternal life. She could not put her understanding of this gift of life into words, but she could feel it in her spirit. It was a gift God had given her, and the gift she wanted the world to have; salvation that comes only from the only begotten Son of God – Jesus things.

The God Who Cleaves – Tim Wade

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Words fascinate me. Their ability to convey thoughts and feelings, paint images onto the mind, and conjure up the deepest emotion, amazes me.
I especially like the word cleave. Cleave is the only word in the English language that is its own antonym. For example, a man who gets married leaves his mother and father and cleaves unto or becomes one with his wife. A butcher, however, uses a cleaver to cleave or divide meat into different pieces. No other word can make such a claim.

Over the past few years I have studied the word cleave and made a disturbing discovery. Both uses of the word live within me. Within my humanity is the power to both unite and divide, to be a maker of peace and an advocate of war. The one area I see this duality most is in my speech. I bless my children one minute, and sometimes yell at them the next. Or in my car I get angry with another driver right after telling someone about Jesus. Truly, in my humanity my heart is divided.

And yet, despite this division, we serve a God who understands the temptations of the world, and knows how easy it can be to give in to them. For this reason the grace of God, the unearned, unmerited favor of God is so freely given to you and me. As followers of Jesus it is our desire to cleave unto God and bask in His love. However, as humans we are prone to be divisive in our weakness. For this reason I will always be grateful that no matter how often we His children stray, no matter how many times you and I do the things we do not want to do, the God of heaven will forever cleave unto you and me. Truly, nothing can separate us from His love.

The Heart and Body of Solitude – Tim Wade
avatar

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: ‘Everyone is looking for you!’” Mark 1:35-37

Years ago I worked for a company where I was on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Time off from work was rare and a vacation was all but impossible. Less than a year later I traded that job for a career as a truckdriver where I spent more time away from home, but knew that my days off belonged to me. Then, eight years later, I traded my truck-driving career in for a career in the ministry. Suddenly I had no time off.

After eight years in the ministry I crashed. Spiritually I was a train wreck while emotionally I was extremely fragile. My body fared no better. My blood pressure and cholesterol became elevated for the first time in my life, and I was nearly one hundred pounds overweight! It was only when I arrived at the brink of self destruction that I picked up my Bible and looked to Jesus for an answer to my bloated, stressed-out life.

Like me, Jesus held a job that required him to be on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days each week. Always at the center of someone’s attention, he was a man under constant pressure and scrutiny. Forever being criticized and being forced to defend himself, Jesus was a man whose blood pressure should have been through the roof.

And yet, while Jesus lived in a stress-filled world, the stress-filled world did not live in him. Daily, Jesus removed himself from the stress of his job and escaped to a place of solitude where he and his Father could spend time alone. He went to a place where peace flowed like milk and honey, a place where he would drink deep and eat plenty, and return to work filled with strength, endued with power, and overflowing with love.

Today, mindful of what stress can do to the body, I try to follow the example of Jesus and seek out a quiet place where the pressures of this world can touch neither mind, nor soul, nor body. Leaving the cares of the world behind, I escape to a solitary place, sit at the feet of my Father, and worship a Holy God.

Seek Him for the relief of stress that can only be found in His arms.
