A Fall Down the Stairs

Cast all your anxiety on him because He cares for you.  1 Peter 5:7 NIV

a fall down the stairsOur daughter called me while I cooked supper one night: “Mom, Reagan has fallen down the stairs and is on the way to the emergency room.”

Tears poured, and fear crept in. “What ifs” overwhelmed me. What if she dies? What if she has suffered brain damage? What if she has broken bones and needs surgery? My mind played dirty tricks on me.

Then I surrendered and prayed, “Lord, please be with our precious Reagan and let her be alright.” For more than an hour, I prayed, cried, and waited for an update.

Our daughter and son-in-law had been on a date, and their children were at home with another set of grandparents when the accident occurred. Reagan had fallen down the steps to their basement and landed on a concrete floor—hitting a concrete wall on the way down. When she landed, she just lay there. It must have been a frightful moment for their Mamaw to witness. Our oldest granddaughter said Mamaw screamed for her husband to come quickly.

The doctor who examined Reagan found no broken bones and said the tumble had slowed her fall. It was a miracle she had no injuries. Not even a scratch on her little body.

God wants us to stand firm in our faith when anxiety tries to overcome us. Cast all your anxiety on him because He cares for you. Peter writes this letter to comfort and encourage us to stay strong when fear tries to overwhelm us. Memorizing Scripture helps when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. So does prayer. Our prayers should demonstrate joy and thanksgiving. Praying also calms our hearts.

How can you keep fear at bay when bad news comes?
