Shopping for Comfort

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.  2 Corinthians 1:3 NKJV

shopping for comfortShopping with Daddy was interesting because he didn’t know the first thing about helping me shop for clothes. Little did I know I would soon be shopping for comfort.

After work one day, Daddy took me to a nice clothing store for children. The sales lady helped us as we looked through the racks of clothes. We came home with a lovely reversible red and blue plaid wool skirt. He also bought me a liner for underneath since the wool was not very soft. Then, he added in some other necessities.

The following day after I dressed for school, Daddy said I couldn’t go dressed as I was. The white liner peeked from beneath my skirt by several inches. Like any smart dad, he reached for the stapler and stapled the liner to shorten it.

A little girl needs a mother, but I didn’t have one during those tender years. As I neared the season of becoming a young lady, my mother went to be with Jesus. She would not be there to teach me about sewing, cooking, hairstyles, make-up, dating, social graces, and growing up.

My father told me the sad news as we sat together in my room. Our pastor and other close friends stood silently around us. They were heartbroken and expected me to cry, but I didn’t—until I watched my father cry. I felt so sorry for him that I began to cry.

I wondered where God was. I was too young to ask or understand then, but He was right there with me. He was a present help in my time of trouble—then and since. As I aged, I learned to draw close to God. His strength, peace, and comfort surround me. Whenever I read the Scriptures, I experience His closeness.

God comforts us in all our afflictions. When I lost my mom, the Lord provided hugs from family and friends. We were encouraged and supported by a community of love.

God is always with us. He is merciful. We can lean on the Lord for strength and comfort in troubled times.

How can you draw near to God when you need comfort?
