Changing of the Guard

For I learned in whatever state I am, to be content.  Philippians 4:11 NKJV

changing of the guardA friend and I attended our usual once-a-month breakfast get-together.

We sat in the same booth and ordered the same meal. As we talked, we laughed about life and even went down memory lane. Suddenly, our laughter shifted to many of the challenges we were currently experiencing. I felt overwhelmed by my personal experiences and how circumstances looked grim. But my friend commented that she was content, despite her challenges. Her comment interrupted my whole decision to complain about how bad things were. I commented, “That doesn’t make any sense.”

I couldn’t understand how she could be so happy during a crisis. Then our conversation reminded me of this Scripture: For I learned in whatever state I am, to be content. Paul didn’t mean he was delighted and all smiles. He merely adjusted to different circumstances and challenges.

We can overcome any challenge with God’s help, even though it may not be easy. We will face many different events where we must adjust, but it does not mean the situation is permanent. Just as we experience different seasons in nature, we experience different seasons in our lives. Some experiences may feel cold and callous, while others seem vibrant and exciting. At other times, it may appear nothing is happening at all.

Whatever we face, we can remind ourselves that we can adjust to different situations with God’s help. We can even journal about when we experienced a challenge or when life was floating by. Then we can think about how things have improved.

Every situation will not look the same, but we can rest assured God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

How can you remember God never changes, even though your situations might?
