Inevitably, every night before bedtime, my six-year-old daughter has a ritual she must perform.
After story time and prayers, we must turn on her closet light and close the door so that only the tiniest sliver of light shines through. The amount of light permitted has changed over the years in conjunction with her age. However, the concept is always the same. The light lets her see her surroundings or the truth behind a sudden noise or shadow on the wall.
When she was three, this light had to shine over everything. But now, at the mature age of six, a little sliver of light is all she needs to comfort her—at least until a nightmare occurs and the door is once again widened to vanquish the darkness that covers her room.
Many of us use the same tactics daily. When troubles abound—money, health, or family issues—we open our closet doors to God’s light. We come to Him frequently, asking for His help and guidance. During these times, our faith is at its strongest. We open our Bibles and look for answers. Our hearts are in deepest connection with Christ.
However, as we get comfortable in our routines and life becomes static, we walk through life with only that sliver of light to guide us. The greater part of our world is shadowed by the darkness behind the shut door, and we easily fall prey to the world’s temptations.
God wants us to continuously walk in the light of his truth and righteousness. He wants us to be like my daughter when she was three and keep the closet door to our world wide open to God’s light.
Make a plan to keep your closet door open to God’s light.
