Prepared for the Wedding

I will rejoice greatly in the LORD. My soul will exult in my God for He has clothed me with garments of salvation. He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness.  Isaiah 61:10 NASB

prepared for the weddingOne morning our mailbox contained a costly cream-colored silky envelope addressed in elegant calligraphy.

I ripped open the large envelope and pulled out a smaller one inscribed with our first names only. Inside was a thin sheet of lacey paper overlaying an embossed information card with golden swirls around the edges. A friend’s daughter was getting married and had invited my husband and me.

My eyes scanned the details. Suggested attire: black tie. I sighed and started calculating what we must buy. Let’s see—tux, tie, shirt, and dress shoes for my husband, and evening gown, fancy shoes, jewelry, and something to hide the tummy for me.

And oh … the gift registry. Our attendance at this large, formal wedding came at a high price. Arriving simply dressed and empty-handed would be an insult to the hosts and out of the question.

But the greatest wedding feast of all time is yet to come, and we must prepare for it too. When Jesus appears and calls believers to Himself, there will be unending celebration and joy for all who have placed their faith in Him. But like any wedding, we need an invitation, something to wear, and a gift.

The good news is this: anyone who believes in the finished work of Jesus on the cross is invited into heaven and to the feast. The verse from Isaiah the prophet answers the question about what we need to wear.

Jesus provides the only acceptable attire—the robe of righteousness. He took our sins upon Himself on the cross and in exchange, gave us His robe of righteousness. That robe, purchased by His blood, is the most expensive garment ever.

And what gift is acceptable at the heavenly wedding? Only our faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection on our behalf.

Have you taken seriously the Lord’s invitation to spend eternity with Him? It’s open to all who receive Jesus as their Savior. Don’t delay. Consider your invitation today.
