Our One Constant

And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.  Colossians 1:17 ESV

our one constantHow can God hold all things together when someone targets your daughter in a murder for hire?

My friends must have asked this question when their son-in-law hired someone to kill their daughter. Throughout that time, it seemed as if their life dissolved around them. They wanted to focus on Jesus, yet they knew they might find their daughter dead at any moment.

To help his wife, the husband had a bracelet engraved for her with the words, In Him all things hold together. This was not just a piece of jewelry but a constant reminder that our Lord is the Creator of all things. He is God and is from everlasting to everlasting. He is also the constant sustaining power.

In his commentary on our Scripture, John Gill [1] states, “And all the affairs of Providence relating to all creatures are governed, directed, and managed by Him, in conjunction with the Father and the blessed Spirit.”

We can even glimpse this constant sustaining power through a child’s voice. Years ago, I heard my four-year-old son singing, “He’s got the whole worlt in His hands. He’s got the whole wide worlt in His hands.”

We belong to that world, and the wonder of a child highlights our one constant: Jesus, the One who is there when we are crumbling.

Think of a promise you can claim as you rest, knowing that Jesus holds everything together in your life.
