A Devotion May Be Someone's Only Bible

Praying with Our Friend

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  Romans 8:26 NIV

praying with our friendI journal a lot. Every six months, I reread what I have written—the thoughts and prayers I put on paper. Not every time was the outcome what I wanted. But God knows what is best and provides. I have seen this repeatedly in my journaling and in life.

I once found myself conversing with someone I knew only a little. We were at a party for someone we both knew mutually. The conversation was quite pleasant, as I realized we talked and listened equally.

As I drove home and thought about our conversation, I realized this is what conversation should be between God and me. I can’t be the only one talking or asking for something. I can only hear God’s direction when I listen to His response.

Talking to God isn’t different from talking to a good friend or loved one. Genuine interest and listening must happen on both ends. The talking just opens the opportunity to listen more.

When praying, we are reaching God through the help of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we are not alone. The Spirit helps us ask for God’s will.

Remember you are praying with a friend when you pray.
