All of us have been insulted and had people say false things about us. But how often do we remember God’s blessing for being persecuted for His name’s sake?
There was a season of my life when I had to deal with people who constantly slandered, insulted, persecuted, and vexed me to dishearten and discourage my walk with the Lord. I had to be patient with people who didn’t deserve it.
But that same godly patience and humility reminded me to bless and not curse my enemies. We inherit a blessing for doing so. When I remembered this, dealing with vexatious and irritating people who tried to provoke and exasperate me became easier.
Jesus was also patient and self-controlled with people who didn’t deserve it. Despite our obstinate and sinful rebellion against Him, He still loves us, pursues us, and calls us back into the sheep pens where we belong—in His presence.
As disciples of Christ, we need to imitate this godly patience and humility toward an unbelieving world caught in the snares, lies, and grips of the adversary. Additionally, we should respond in a Christlike manner instead of a worldly manner. Doing so helps us honor the Lord with our words and deeds. We also inherit a blessing for doing so.
Think of how you can honor the Lord and show godly love, humility, patience, and restraint when dealing with people who aren’t acting loveable or kind. Seek out God’s Word and delight in Him.
