Biblical Discipline

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.  Proverbs 12:1 NIV

I once endured a period of homelessness. Physical and emotional exhaustion took its toll at times, and it felt as if there were moments when I was either overly critical of the application of discipline or somewhat lacking on the correct application of it. It was difficult trying to correctly manage the appropriate amount of discipline when correcting small or large mistakes. When I walked long distances and was short on food or finances, I was tempted to over-discipline or under-discipline myself when I was already exhausted and weary, especially after working hard.

I had to learn the discipline of resting. I also had to understand the different forms of spiritual rest: sleeping, taking a break, listening to music, or doing something I enjoyed. In this way, I was not overly harsh on my weary body and mind.

Correctly applying discipline to any mistake or change is essential in our walk with the Lord. When we do, we become more effective in apprehending and applying biblical wisdom and more sanctified by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. We become Christlike in our character and love more sacrificially and deeply as Christ did for us at our worst moments.

A part of understanding what we need to correct or adjust may differ depending on the circumstances and what the problem is. Then, we can identify the correct form of discipline to apply.

Ponder the areas of your Christian walk that you struggle with. Think about the correct biblical discipline application. Seek out the Word of the Lord and delight yourself in Him.
