Randy and I were newlyweds when we decided to escape for a day of hiking. Feeling burdened with choices about our new life together, we pointed our car toward the mountains.
Arriving midafternoon, we started our hike on a little-traveled trail. Eventually, Randy pointed at a large rock. We sat under the trees and enjoyed the rustle of leaves and the cool spring air. We prayed, desperately wanting to know what God had in store for us. When we opened our eyes, daylight had faded. The trail we followed disappeared in the twilight. Darkness falls fast in the forest, and we had lost the trail.
Trying to pick our way down, we could no longer recognize the edge of the cliffs. Knowing we were in danger, Randy stopped and prayed for God to lead us. When we opened our eyes, the deep darkness remained. Then something happened. A bright light, like the flashbulb of a camera, popped off. Soon, hundreds of dancing lights joined it.
Fireflies filled the air. We could hardly believe our eyes. They miraculously took on a swaying formation that marked a winding path before us. Amazed, we silently followed their trail. When we reached our car, the pattern disappeared as the lights dispersed in a beautiful display of twinkles.
“I am the light of the world. Let your light so shine,” I heard God whisper. At that moment, I knew the answers to our what, when, and where questions about the future. We were to be lights in a dark world. We were to shine every step for others. Shining God’s light one step at a time, we would find ourselves at His destination—just like following the firefly path that took us to ours.
Let’s walk in the light that destroys darkness and mark a path for others as the fireflies did for me. When you feel lost in the dark, the light of Jesus will always light your way. Then you can lead others out of their dark places too.
