Doubting Disciples

So the other disciples told Thomas, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”  John 20:25 NIV

My desk phone rang. The financial officer in another division called to offer me a newly created position within the company. We had worked together on special projects, and he sought my help.

“Well, that sounds very appealing,” I said, “but I need something permanent at my current salary.”

“You’ve got it,” he said. “How soon can you start?”

My doubts immediately turned into faith. God did not let me suffer longer than necessary.

Thomas’ doubts also turned into faith when he was ready to see Jesus. Thomas was absent when others welcomed the resurrected Messiah. Poor Thomas. Where was he? What kept him away from those who mourned the loss of their beloved leader?

Hardheaded skepticism kept him from rejoicing, believing, and encouraging his comrades in their unique God-sighting experience.

God can help us recognize doubts and then surrender to faith when it knocks or calls. We can get up, move, open our eyes, and look for God everywhere—even in a dark, upper room with doubting disciples.

Today, push all doubts and fears out of your mind and step out in faith.
