The Waiting

Do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.  2 Peter 3:8 NIV

Much later in life, after considerable doubt that God would ever bring about my Prince Charming, I finally met that great guy. I expected that the “babies in the carriage” would come right after marriage, but they didn’t. After multiple failed IVF rounds, I discovered it difficult to imagine myself as a mother. I questioned God’s timing and purpose for constantly making me wait.

The Bible’s first words are “in the beginning,” which marks when God created time and the clock started ticking. It’s easy to say that a person believes God controls everything, including His mysterious timing. Yet it is more challenging to come to terms with the waiting and wondering why God is not giving us what we’re so steadfastly praying for.

For Peter to even write this is a bit ironic because he is well-known for doubting and denying Jesus three times. Trusting was not this guy’s strong suit. And even though we can argue that impatience stems from the instant availability of almost anything, waiting is a common theme early in the Bible.

Moses had to wait forty years to free the Israelites from Egypt. Poor Job was so faithful in his patience for the Lord that he persisted even when he lost everything.

God’s ultimate plan doesn’t deal in seconds or even months but in eternity. We must view His timing and withholding with an understanding that we cannot comprehend.

I am often left bitter and doubt God’s purpose for this difficult journey to motherhood. But I sustain strength by remembering that even though I can’t see how all these puzzle pieces will ever form a beautiful picture, I know God can view all things at once, including how all this waiting will serve a greater purpose.

Pray for God to give you strength in the waiting.
