“Why are two men with axes walking through our house?” my husband asked.
I explained that this was the day our old water softener was scheduled for removal. We had disconnected it but never removed it until we put our house on the market. Putting off this task led to the salt calcifying. I now had my own personal pillar of salt. The water company had to send two men to break up the salt manually.
In Genesis, the angels instructed Lot to run with his family and escape their city’s destruction. God specifically told them not to look back. Instead of following God’s instructions and moving forward to safety, Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.
The alarming amount of force and noise required to break apart the salt block in my basement reminded me how painful things become when I procrastinate. And when I don’t listen to God’s word, I get stuck. Focusing on past slights makes me harder and less forgiving.
Since moving to our new home, I have enjoyed a clean slate in home maintenance. But the ultimate clean slate is found in Jesus. He provides new life. Through His love and forgiveness, He melts calcified hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.
Could you use a fresh start or a clean slate? Allowing Jesus into your heart by reading His word sheds light and warmth on all the hardened parts of life. Let Jesus help you look forward.
