One day, while commuting to work, the battery light on the dashboard began to flicker. Once I reached my destination, I checked the battery and discovered it had sufficient charge, but the alternator’s output voltage was weak. I wondered whether the car would make it home but decided to chance it. While on my way home, the battery warning flashed again. Other system warnings soon followed. Then the headlights dimmed, and the car slowly came to a complete stop. Lights out.
Finding myself on a dark two-lane highway with no emergency lane, wondering what to do, I shouted out to God for help. A myriad of thoughts rushed through my mind: Am I safe here? How do I get home? Do I call my wife? Why did I take the risk? In the darkness, with only the help of a flashlight and cell phone, I remembered I had roadside assistance. Eventually, I made my way safely home on the back of a tow truck.
God is our source, always available and able, although He requires our participation. The cares of this life and neglect of daily communion with the Lord will inevitably inhibit our connection. While ignoring warning signs, we may even continue to function briefly on yesterday’s charge, but we will suddenly find ourselves stranded.
In the parable of the ten virgins, the oil represents the Holy Spirit. He is the promised helper, counselor, and source of spiritual life. We must rely on His power and energy to live a life pleasing to God. He is indispensable.
Although God’s mercy may be our proverbial roadside assistance when we falter, we should not wait for a crisis to realize what we might have missed.
Think about decisions you should make to open your life to God’s limitless power. He has promised to walk with you and be your strength for the journey.
