Vanilla is one of my favorite scents. Its sweet fragrance almost makes my mouth water.
I like vanilla in desserts and especially in my lotions. One of my favorite gift shops is all about lotions, potions, creams, soaps and candles to fill our homes and senses with luxurious fragrances. My pantry shelves are filled with these sweet treats to enjoy, share, and give as gifts. The majority of my collection incorporates the aroma of sweet-smelling vanilla.
My dearest aunt enjoyed flowers for their beauty and fragrance. I can picture her face reflecting great joy, peace, and love not just while working in her flower garden but also all the time. This reminds me of Jesus. In fact, her son noted in his Mother’s Day card to her, “Mama, you’re just like Jesus.”
In all of my memories of her, she had this same look on her face. She never seemed rattled, but if she was, it didn’t show. Her voice, expression, and demeanor were naturally pleasant, calm, and steady. She lived out a quiet and gentle life, reflecting confidence and contentment in her Creator. It was as sweet to me as a fragrance.
As believers, we should mimic my aunt and Jesus. We, too, are a fragrance of Christ. When we go into the world, we wear this perfume for other believers as we encourage each other. We are also to wear it among those who haven’t believed. We become a pleasant scent, so we can draw them to the fragrance of Christ.
Our fragrance becomes a deep contentment and joy that comes from the presence of the Lord in our lives. We can enjoy the privilege of walking and talking with Him throughout the course of our day as we listen and let the Spirit fill our hearts and minds.
Let the presence of Jesus reflect Christ’s sweet fragrance.
