The Lioness in My Office

The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.  Nahum 1:7 NIV

The job became available after my husband left me for another woman. I was forty-five at the time. I married soon after graduating high school and had never worked outside the home. Being hired was like a miracle. I worked hard to become an accomplished district secretary.

When I began my job, the organization was in the process of finding a district representative who would become my supervisor—it was only a two-person office. I worked alone for three weeks before my first supervisor was hired. The other employee and I worked well together, but eventually, he was promoted to another position.

Over time, two more supervisors were hired. Like my prior peer, they also gave me good yearly evaluations and pay raises. But things changed when the lioness was hired as my supervisor. She focused her time and efforts on redecorating the office, neglecting her work in the process. When problems arose, she blamed me. She would yell at me in the presence of our volunteers and slam doors to emphasize her anger. Because we were the only two in our office, it was her word against mine.

Tension built, and she called me into her office one day. Her supervisor was also present. After several hours of my boss lying about my work, I was placed on probation.

One day, when I arrived for work, she placed a mountain of work on my desk and said she wanted it done by noon. Then she left. Later, she returned with her supervisor. They called me into the office. After telling more lies about my work, my supervisor fired me, ordered me to gather my belongings, and told me to leave immediately.

I left the office with my head held high. My faith in God carried me through. Just two weeks after being fired, I eventually began a new job.

If you are facing a crisis in your life, be assured you are not facing it alone, as God reminded the people through the prophet Nahum. The Lord loves you and is walking beside you. Allow Him to guide you.
