Taste and See

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.  Psalm 34:8 NIV

Due to my husband’s poor health, I had not visited this store for a few years. A year had passed since his death. I decided to make the thirty-minute drive to make purchases and visit with an employee I had met there several years ago. It was exciting to catch up. She recognized me immediately, and I felt special. Driving home, it dawned on me that I should have given her a copy of my most recent book of poetry. I could mail it to her. But did I? Nope.

Soon after this visit, I returned to the store for more birdseed. God quietly reminded me I had not given her a copy of my book. I signed it with a nice note and made the drive. Sadly, my friend wasn’t there. I spent a little time looking around and got in line. Then I saw my friend arrive and begin chatting with other customers. I was not the only one she made feel special.

When she finished that visit, she turned to me. I smiled, handed her the book, and said, “This is for you. It’s a thank-you gift.”

She opened a page, started reading, and cried. She had just taken her elderly mother to a doctor’s appointment. No bad news. Just ongoing problems with aging. My friend was tired and overwhelmed. The poem she read ministered to her. She hugged me, cried some more, and said she was grateful.

The Lord knew she didn’t need a copy of the poetry a few weeks before. But she needed it that day. He spoke to my heart that morning and directed me. I followed and was allowed to taste and see that the Lord is good.  He could give my friend refuge in some of the words He had given me for poetry written some time ago.

It’s time for all of us to wait quietly, listen, taste God’s goodness, and take refuge in Him.

Think of things that will help you wait, listen, and taste that the Lord is good.
