I began training my retriever, Sophie, to be a helper when she was a pup. We often hiked the trails together in our mountain home. It was important that she could help me if I tripped, fell, or had an accident. I trained Sophie to respond immediately whenever I called out the word help. This was a command she took to heart. No matter how interested she was in chasing a tantalizing scent, once I hollered help, she ran to my side within seconds.
She also learned to lie down, sit, and stand firm during her training. Whether in a prone or semi-prone position, I could use her body as leverage to get myself back up to a standing position. Having Sophie with me day by day in all kinds of weather on all types of walks reassured me I would have the help necessary if I encountered a mishap and needed rescuing.
Moses also had a helper he could rely on in times of need: the Lord. When we make God the center of our lives, He will even command angels to guard us in all our ways.
God's protection does not mean that mishaps will never befall us. After all, we dwell in a fallen world, and accidents happen. Through it all, though, God is with us. He is our ever-present help in times of trouble—there to lift, restore, and get us going again. Therefore, we should not fear.
Sophie was always there for me. She was loyal and faithful. I could count on her. Even more so, however, God is faithful and loyal. We can always count on Him as a refuge and fortress. He is there for those who love and trust Him, those who enjoy walking upon the trails of life with Him.
Thank God daily that He is your helper.
