I saw a TV show once with a man who gave up everything for a board game he invented. He believed so much in this game and its potential to make him millions that he gave up his job, house, savings, and, eventually, his family. He sacrificed everything for a game. The game was more important than anything else in his life. He believed if it succeeded, he would be complete.
That memory has stuck with me for years. At the time, I wondered how someone could give up everything for something so trivial, but often we do. We forgo praying at dinner because it takes time away from eating. We skip church because we’d rather sleep in. We leave God out of decisions because He might disagree with our choices. While it may seem small compared to what the game maker sacrificed, we relinquish our relationship with God for earthly comforts.
Fortunately, God doesn’t require a vow of poverty or a life without joy. But we do need to live in accordance with His Word. Jesus sacrificed the greatest thing of all for us: His life. We must believe in God’s Son and maintain the connection through fellowship and prayer.
Believe that God alone makes you complete, not the things of this world.
