Stop Eating Junk

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.  1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV

Anyone who knows me knows I honestly have no self-control when it comes to drinking or “having a good time” because leave it to me to take it way too far each time. I could honestly sit here all day and try to explain why I’m like that or seem to chase all the same things that never worked before.

As I lay there talking to God, I realized there was no way I could ever break free from this lifestyle by myself, no matter how badly I wanted to. I have felt convicted of how I live and have honestly tried to gain self-control to change, but I didn’t believe God would help me. That was the problem. The Holy Spirit spoke to my heart with an example I can relate to as a college student.

I’m a broke college kid with no money for good groceries, so I eat junk food and feel terrible because it’s slowly killing me. I go home to my mom’s and ask her to take me grocery shopping for healthier food. I’m tired of eating junk food, and I feel miserable all the time.

Like most moms in the South, she’s beyond excited to do this for me. I’m unsure if it’s just because I finally came home and she missed me, or just because she loves me. I believe it’s both. She also knows healthier food would make me feel better and improve my way of living.

This is exactly how God feels about us when we finally come to Him and say, “Hey, I want to be better. I want to be free from this junk-food lifestyle I’m living, but I’m broke and can’t afford to do it by myself. I need Your help.”

God, being the good Father He is, will always be excited to take us shopping for better ways of living, such as peace, joy, comfort, self-control, gentleness, kindness, and love. He gives us the power to overcome the temptations from the devil.

Thank God for being a good Father, who is always willing to take you shopping for better things.
