My favorite days are when I feel a sense of inner peace—my family is doing well, my relationships are good, and all seems well in my little corner of the world. We just love those peaceful, turmoil-free moments in life. Peace is something we all desire. But how can we have an abiding, soul-soothing peace?
First, we need to know that our lives are in the hands of someone greater than us. When we put our trust in Jesus Christ, we have confidence that whatever comes, we'll spend eternity in heaven. When we come to know Him, we are immediately indwelt by the Holy Spirit, who helps us through our trials.
Second, we must also be at peace with others. This can be tough, especially within families. But the Holy Spirit helps us forgive—even when the offender hasn’t asked for forgiveness. We’ll never live turmoil-free days until Jesus returns, so we must always be prepared to forgive. A heart of unforgiveness leads to bitterness, anger, and resentment. Through the Holy Spirit, we can do this counterintuitive thing.
Third, a peaceful life is one where we have a sense of purpose. As believers, we must glorify God and serve and love others in His name. We can all find a place to volunteer and use our skills and talents in our churches and communities. As believers, we’re uniquely gifted to do so.
Fourth, we must remember God cares for us. He expects us to come to Him in prayer, giving Him our worries and concerns. He wants us to know He’s all-sufficient for our needs. I don't know what I would’ve done if I hadn't been able to pour my heart out to the Lord over my heartaches.
Finally, we won’t have peace until we understand that this world is not our home; heaven is. Even when natural disasters and tragic world events rock our world, God is still in control. Nothing happens that He doesn’t allow. We can make an impact by voting, volunteering, and speaking out, but ultimately, our world is in God’s hands. This should give us peace.
Abide in the life-changing peace of our Savior, Jesus Christ, until He comes again in glory and power to take us to be with Him forever.
