For Better or Worse

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?  Job 2:10 NIV

We only feel excitement as we stand at the altar, our faces aglow with love and romance, reciting those vows. But we don’t want to see the for worse, for poorer, or in sickness.

Perhaps we should also say those vows when we accept Christ as our Savior. We feel His love and presence, the release of our sins and burdens, and the love of the people around us praising God in celebration of our life-altering decision. We don’t think of the for worse, for poorer, or in sickness. And yes, even the persecution.

There is no better story depicting for better or worse than Job’s story. He is the ultimate example of accepting the consequences of a fallen world without sacrificing his faith in God. Yes, he questioned why, yet he never faltered in his faith or belief in God’s all-knowing power.

Jesus tells us we will go through the for worse, for poorer, and in sickness. Yet we never have to lose hope. He has overcome the world.

None of us wants to face such times, but we will until we are with our Father in heaven. Praise God, however, for we are not left alone in those times of trouble. Just as a spouse vows at the altar to be with us through it all, Jesus promises never to leave or forsake us.

We must have faith in Jesus and His promises. Going through tough times can bring a couple closer together if they have a strong and healthy marriage. The same can happen in our relationship with Jesus. We need to have a strong and healthy relationship with our Savior. We are never closer to Him than when we praise and pray through the tough times.

Have faith. Jesus has overcome.
