Resting in the Face of Fear

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28 NLT

The unknown produces fear. This feeling can take over daily in a job that requires multitasking at various levels. As the fear creeps in, my mind believes I can’t get all the tasks taken care of while attending to the unplanned work interruptions. Then my mind takes it one step further. The tasks that are left incomplete will extend into tomorrow and the next day. The rumination begins.

I recognize my willingness to step into the rabbit hole of unknowns. The stories I am making up in my head are stories that will likely not happen. But by this point, anxiety washes over me, fueling the fire of untruths and distracting me from what God has intended for the day.

Feelings of fear can distract us from God’s assurance. Assurance is a state of certainty. We know for sure that something is true. We find assurance in our belief in the Father and His Word. As children of God, nothing can separate us from His love. God loves us so much that He provides assurances, peace, comfort, and strength.

However, we cannot live in both fear and truth simultaneously, for the Spirit of God does not give fear. We must choose to abandon the lies and trust in our one true God. This is where we find rest.

Scripture reminds us of God’s wonderful promises. Don’t let fear overwhelm you. Seek truth in God’s Word, and rest in it.
