The Blessing of Friendship

I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.  Luke 16:9 NIV

We are friends with two very special couples. Although we all live within a twenty-five-mile radius of each other, we can go for long periods without seeing each other. Yet I know that if life comes crashing down, my prayer request to them will fill the time gaps.

After many years of praying, I have embarked on a new journey. I knew God was saying now was the time. But until I took the leap of faith and quit my job, God did not show me the first steps of my journey. I tried hard to plan for it financially. (I hear the laughter. It’s okay. God is laughing too.) No, it did not work out quite how I planned it. We all know God does things differently. I still think my plan would have been better.

I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. I had to read this verse a few times to understand what Jesus is saying. He tells us to use our resources to bless our friends. Everything on earth will be gone someday, but our friendships will continue eternally.

My journey led me toward a writers’ conference. I was new to writing and wanted to experience and learn all I could. Yet my budget told me to experience it another time. It is difficult for me sometimes when a simple prayer request to those special friends provides the answer. I don’t always understand God’s ways. However, I do understand that whatever journey God has us on will always contain blessings we need to recognize. I have looked down my path and have discovered the blessing of friendship.

Think of ways you can better understand the blessing of friendship.
