Practice Makes Perfect

He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”  Luke 8:21 NIV

Selections from a Broadway musical resounded within the drama classroom. Through the door, I watched seventh graders swing their arms and gracefully step in time to the spirited music.

The walls of the band classroom echoed the school’s fight song. Slightly out-of-tune tubas, miscued drums, and blaring trumpets gradually birthed harmony out of the cacophony.

Clear, young voices produced a jovial song in the chorus classroom, muffled only by heavy doors. I slipped inside, sat at the keyboard, and helped bring several rehearsed songs to life. I am honored to accompany school ensembles in my community.

My passion for music was launched when I met my best friend’s antique upright grand piano. Little did I know that asking for my own piano would result in weekly lessons and at least thirty minutes a day spent seated at the black-and-white keys.

I dreaded daily practice for five long years until my teacher recommended I attend a junior high school where students were encouraged to accompany their choruses. As an accompanist, hours of practice at the piano suddenly brought me joy, and still do these many years later.

We must practice excellence to reflect Christ’s perfection effectively. I practice by reading God’s word, praying, and obeying His commands. I practice being a noble and loving wife, mother, and nana. And I practice being a formidable Bridge opponent. The axiomatic saying, “Use it or lose it,” is true.

As a child of God, strive to put His Word into practice daily.
