A Sharp-Edged Tool

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.  Hebrews 4:12 NLT

Photo courtesy of pixabay and VetVisst. Comfort food is what I’m looking for on a chilly winter’s day. And easy access to it. What better than instant mashed potatoes? The envelope containing the prize provides instructions to “Tear here” and features a small arrow. The arrow seems to point downward. But I see nothing that indicates a place to begin tearing. Still, I give it a try on the edge next to the arrow. Nope. A little farther down. Nope again. At the top of the package? No way. Repeated failures occur until my fingers ache. This package will not open according to the directions printed on it. To open the package, I needed a sharp-edged tool, a pair of scissors.

How often do we pursue the promise of a better life through various means? We follow the advice of well-intentioned mentors and instructors. The world offers so many options: education, careers and jobs, marriage and other relationships, possessions, and philosophies. Where will we find the desired comfort? It’s like that mashed potato package. All the directions in the world won’t get us there when they are false or don’t live up to their claims.

God has given us a tool that is sharper than a two-edged sword. His Word provides us with all the instructions we need, not only for comfort in our current circumstances, but also for what lies ahead after we pass from this world. It gives us access to a life that far exceeds a big bowl of buttery potatoes. It tells us we need a Savior. Jesus came to rescue us from our attempts to follow directions that take us nowhere.

Open the two-edged instrument God has provided—His Word—and find all the comfort you need.
