From the tantalizing scent of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and clean laundry to the smell of my dad’s cologne and warm coconut that reminds me of a day at the beach, I love delicious scents. They not only help me reminisce about cherished places, loved ones, and treasured memories, but also fashion a welcoming atmosphere that draws others in. Unpleasant scents, on the other hand, foster an adverse environment and repel others.
Paul compares Christ’s followers to a sweet perfume, used by God to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere. What a beautiful image—and a lovely scent. If I’m honest with myself, however, the fragrance I emit through my attitudes, words, and actions is not always sweet and delightful. When I succumb to impatience, selfishness, or anger, my scent is downright putrid.
Fortunately, as the Holy Spirit convicts my heart and continues to mold me into the likeness of Jesus, I recognize when I need a scent overhaul. Then I quickly repent and allow God’s grace to cleanse me of those nasty odors and paint me with the fragrance of forgiveness.
When we live a life filled with love for God and our neighbors, we emit a delightful aroma that pleases those we encounter. We draw others toward us. Following Christ’s example in the way we live and treat others, we operate like a sweet perfume, spreading the knowledge and love of Christ everywhere we go. Such a pleasing aroma honors God and draws others to the source of that lovely scent: Jesus.
Daily, ask God and yourself what scent your actions and attitudes emit. With God’s help, you can live a life that overflows with love and emanates a pleasing aroma to God and others.
