I once set a goal to walk a certain number of steps daily to get myself moving, despite my primarily sedentary job. Every week, I wrote on my goal sheet: walk six thousand steps. Each morning, I looked at my steps from the previous day and recorded the results, only to find myself discouraged that I hadn’t achieved my goal. This continued for weeks until I realized I would never reach the goal by only looking back to see if I had magically met it.
As I thought about this, it suddenly made sense that I must watch my real-time steps to achieve the goal. This would involve me checking my steps throughout the day to see where I was and then being intentional about adding more steps to reach my goal.
It didn’t take long to connect this principle with my spiritual walk. Where is my focus? Am I always looking back and expecting to maintain my close relationship with Christ each day? Being mindful of the past can provide us with a way forward, but to live in the moment with Christ, we must keep our eyes on Him. But what does that look like?
Could we take a moment to pray at lunchtime? Or post a Scripture at our desk to meditate on during the day? Are we willing to grab our phones and open a Bible app rather than our favorite social media app? When we choose to do these things, we keep our eyes on Jesus.
When I started watching my steps throughout the day, I began to meet my goal. And when we intentionally keep our eyes on Jesus, fuzzy decisions or frustrating situations often come into focus. What we focus on will drive our emotions and behaviors.
Think of some ways you can walk out your faith by keeping your eyes on Jesus.
