“That’s a beautiful picture. Where is that?” she asked, pointing to the picture of the serene ocean waves on my binder.
It would be one of my last meetings with my supervising professor before I graduated with a degree in elementary education.
“That’s the Outer Banks. I’ll be going there with my family after graduation if I can make it through student teaching,” I replied. I was stressed and couldn’t see past my current circumstances and deadlines.
“What do you mean, if?” She laughed and assured me I would definitely make it.
This lady had been with me through the ups and downs and the tears and laughter as I trudged through my last semester. I found so much comfort in her words. I knew she wasn’t going to let me fall. I had nothing to worry about.
How many times do we feel as if we aren’t going to make it? We say to ourselves, “If I can just make it through this, I’ll be okay,” perhaps even through tears and sheer desperation. Maybe it’s a last-ditch effort to give ourselves some inkling of hope.
Jesus reminds us that this life will be troublesome at times, but that we should not worry because He has won. Salvation in Christ means we are overcomers too.
No matter how dire our circumstances or what evil this world throws at us, it is not our home. May we find comfort in knowing that one day all the trials of this life will be no more, and we can have eternal rest with our Creator. How we long for the day.
If you feel overwhelmed or trapped in your circumstances, remind yourself that Christ overcame sin and death to make you a conqueror.
