Raindrops Falling on Our Heads

Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  Matthew 7:24-26 NIV

That’s not a sound we want to hear at 6:30 a.m. Nor is water splashing on our face a welcome sensation. Yet this was how my husband and I awoke one Sunday morning, forcing us to rise earlier than desired.

We had rented an Airbnb for our anniversary and planned to read and relax. The premature rousing frustrated us, not just because of its timing but because this accommodation was expensive. We didn’t expect problems like this when we had paid top dollar.

In the Parable of the Two Builders, Jesus compares two builders—the wise man, who built his house on the rock, and the foolish man, who built his on sand. When the storms came, with their winds, rain, and floods, the wise man’s house stood firm, while the foolish man’s house collapsed. Thankfully, our Airbnb didn’t collapse, but the heavy rainfall revealed that this new construction had at least one flaw.

Similarly, we may look durable on the outside, but trials can reveal our hidden flaws. While a leak may be a problem, a poor foundation is even more disastrous. Like it or not, we will be tested. We can’t bypass challenges any more than we can stop the rain from falling. The time to work on building a life that can withstand the storms isn’t when the leaks begin. It’s today. And tomorrow. And the day after.

Our daily choices will make or break us. We can build a strong foundation by reading and putting into practice God’s Word, making time to pray and listen to the Spirit’s voice, glorifying God, and drawing closer to Him. When we live in this way, we’re building our lives on the solid rock of Jesus, and we can withstand anything.

We’re all in a constant state of construction, and we’re either building wisely or foolishly. Build your life on the solid rock, not shifting sand.
