After the Fall

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28 NIV

As I fell through the air over the steps, I tried to catch myself, but I hit the sidewalk face-first, with a hard thud. Later in the emergency room, after the fall, I was diagnosed with a hematoma, bleeding on the brain, a concussion, and minor seizures. I was rushed by ambulance to a hospital specializing in brain injuries. For two days, I hovered near death as my family hovered near me. After eight days, I was transferred to a rehab closer to home.

With my bruised and swollen face, I looked as though I had been in a fight and lost all rounds. Simple therapy began immediately, and I pushed myself to do whatever the therapists suggested. The brain injuries affected my balance. The first time I tried to walk without a walker was a frightening experience. I felt as though I was falling and cried out in alarm.

Through the encouragement of the therapists and my family, I persisted. I realized that many people were praying for my healing. That helped to provide the determination to continue my efforts.

Finally, “Going Home Day” came. I had been in the rehab for thirty-three days. There had been challenging days, such as coping with wavering emotions, living with a roommate, and enduring the daily routine of therapy. But with the Lord’s help, I accomplished my goal.

Romans 8:28 is one of my favorite Bible verses. I began claiming that verse as a promise of God’s faithfulness when I went through another trial years before.

What good has God brought through the pain and frustrations that I experienced in rehab? After being a patient, I have more compassion and understanding of the disappointments and helplessness patients experience.

You may have faced similar problems. Or your heartaches and challenges may be entirely different from mine. Be assured that the Lord walks with you through your valleys. He will use every despairing moment to draw you nearer to Him and to work for your good.
