Messy Faith, Mighty God

Immediately, Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”  Matthew 14:31 NIV

One moment, we’re walking on water, confident in God’s promises, and the next, we’re sinking, overwhelmed by fear. But here’s the beautiful truth: our faith may be messy, but our God is mighty.

Think about Peter (Matthew 14:31). When he saw Jesus walking on the water, he dared to step out of the boat. For a moment, his faith was strong. He walked toward Jesus, trusting in His power. But then reality set in—the wind howled, the waves crashed, and fear crept into his heart. His eyes shifted from Jesus to the storm, and he began to sink.

Yet in that moment of doubt and fear, Jesus didn’t scold him or let him drown. Instead, He reached out His hand and caught Peter. In admonishing Peter, Jesus wasn’t rejecting Peter. He reminded him that faith isn’t about never faltering. It’s about knowing who to call when we do.

We’ve all been there. We’ve had moments where our faith felt strong, only to be shaken by hardship, uncertainty, or fear. Perhaps we’ve prayed for something but found ourselves doubting whether God really heard us. Maybe we’ve stepped out in faith, but the storms of life made us question if we made the right choice.

The Bible is full of people whose faith wasn’t always steady. Abraham, the father of faith, doubted God’s promise and took matters into his own hands (Genesis 16). Moses hesitated when God called him, questioning his ability to lead (Exodus 3-4). Gideon, although chosen by God, repeatedly asked for signs to confirm God’s will (Judges 6). Even David, a man after God’s own heart, had moments of fear and despair. Yet in every case, God remained faithful.

Faith isn’t about perfection but about perseverance. It is trusting in a God who doesn’t let go, even when we waver. God’s power is made perfect in weakness. Even when our faith feels small, God’s strength is enough. When we struggle, He remains steady. And when we feel like we’re sinking, He reaches out His hand and lifts us up.

If your faith feels messy today—if you’re struggling with doubt, fear, or uncertainty—God is not afraid of your mess. He meets you in the struggle and holds you when you waver. He is the anchor in your storm, mighty enough to carry you through.
