We can’t go anywhere without seeing harassed and helpless people. People who are tired, worn out, stressed, and harried. They feel as if nothing can be done about their lot in life. And people need direction in their lives. Most people want direction at home so that they can assist family members in their struggles. If there’s no sharing, there’s no way to help. People want direction at work too, so that they can coordinate efforts with others. And if we’ve ever been to a big city, then we know how important it is to have directions. I’ve been lost more than once.
We all need to know there’s someone who truly loves us and can instill hope in us for the future. Jesus recognized this. He also recognized what help was needed and stated what to do about it. And He wasn’t talking about map directions or rest from a hard day’s work. It goes much deeper than that. He saw that people need spiritual guidance. People who couldn’t understand why they were on earth and what purpose there was for their lives. He recognized people in need, understood their frustrations, and knew how to address their problems.
For three years, Jesus prepared His disciples for His death and resurrection. This was His eternal solution for believers’ harassed and helpless lives. And for three years, Jesus trained the disciples for such a time as ours. They and others like them were the harvesters, and Jesus continuously emphasized their responsibility as His followers. Unfortunately, not everyone believed it enough to commit to Him (Matthew 9:36).
Jesus promises spiritual healing and life for those who believe—no more hunger or thirsting for righteousness. Our personal attempts to live an obedient life should be a response to what Jesus has done for us, not a goal for individual accolades.
When you feel lost, go to the one who can give you perfect directions.
