We moved into our house in April of 2019. All went well until winter came and the furnace turned on for the first time. We noticed a strange sound that did not sound good, so we called an appliance repair technician. He told us that a costly part was breaking. We had purchased a home with a broken furnace.
We decided to wait until the furnace actually broke and live with the noise in the meantime. Often, friends and family would visit and comment about the jet taking off in our garage. We told them not to fear; the sound was only our furnace.
This lasted for five years until one winter when I awoke to a very cold house. We called the same appliance company, which confirmed that the broken part had finally given out, and the repair would cost $800. We gladly replaced the broken part. That first day, we all noticed how quiet the house was. How strange not to hear the jet taking off every time the furnace kicked on. I realized how much we had all grown accustomed to the brokenness. The loud noise had become background noise in our lives.
Sometimes, we can become so accustomed to the brokenness and sin in our lives that they, too, become background noise. Maybe we don’t think it’s that bad, or perhaps, like our furnace, they have been there so long we don’t even notice them anymore.
God doesn’t want us to stay broken. He knows how much better our lives will be if we allow Him to fix the broken parts. God is so good to help us see what needs some tuning up and maintenance work, and what needs a complete removal and replacement. We only need to give Him access and allow the ultimate technician to work. Whether a broken furnace or a broken spirit, Jesus is there, ready to heal and restore what’s broken. Don’t live with a rattling jet in your garage.
Listen to the Holy Spirit and be aware of what doesn’t sound right.
