Be Still and Know

Be still and know that I am God.  Psalm 46:10 NIV

My to-do list was my guide, and silence felt like wasted time. But one day, in the middle of overwhelming stress, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper, “Be still.” I resisted at first. How could I be still when life kept moving? But as I finally paused, I realized my frantic striving wasn’t bringing peace. It was draining it.

This verse reminds us to be still and know that God is in control (Psalm 46:10). Stillness doesn’t mean inaction. Instead, it means resting in God’s sovereignty. In the original Hebrew, “be still” conveys the meaning of letting go, ceasing to strive, and trusting God to act.

Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to trust Him, not their own efforts. When Moses led the Israelites to the Red Sea, God told them: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14).

In today’s fast-paced world, stillness is counterintuitive. We fill our schedules, scroll endlessly on our phones, and drown in noise. But peace isn’t found in constant motion. We find it in God’s presence.

Being still before God can look like the following:

  • Setting aside quiet moments for prayer and listening.
  • Meditating on Scripture instead of rushing through it.
  • Releasing control and surrendering anxious thoughts to God.

When we stop striving and start trusting, we make room for God’s peace to fill our hearts. What if we intentionally paused today? We could take five minutes to sit in silence before God—no distractions, no requests, just stillness. As we do, we can remind ourselves that God is God and we are not.

The next time life feels overwhelming, resist the urge to strive harder. Instead, be still, breathe, and trust that God is already at work.
