All Creatures of Our God

In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.  Job 12:10 NIV

My young mind’s response was “Oh, so that’s how God put life together.” I had already recognized the similarity of our universe’s patterns to the assumed patterns of the atom’s components. I became fascinated with magnetism and gravity. (And we think Legos and Minecraft are complicated.)

Then I learned the formula for H2O. I was even more excited. Two invisible elements of air bond in a 2:1 ratio to form the molecule essential to all living things. This chemical combination can only be synthesized in a laboratory under exact conditions and with great caution, which is neither safe nor practical. The heat energy produced when scientists attempt to create one molecule of water is enormous, posing a risk of explosions. Energy that only comes from God. Three minuscule pieces of air united by energy.

Science can be fascinating, but it always raises as many new questions as it answers. When I was young, I experienced nature as God’s mysterious sanctuary. Church buildings were stuffy, even if my wonderful dad was the pastor. I was a bit stifled by all the people and pretense.

Out in the natural world, my spirit was free and near to God. In church, I had to sit still and behave, which was difficult. In the woods and fields, I could run in the wind, roll down a grassy hill, listen to birds, study insects, and stare up at the endless starry sky.

Some of my most precious revelations about God’s majesty and glory have overwhelmed me in the natural places of earth and sky. When I became serious about Bible study, I was relieved to find that God made the earth and all that is within it so that we might know and appreciate Him.

Breathe in the living Spirit. Drink in His holy water. Remember, science is nothing without Him.
